President Donald Trump’s White House is insisting that Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James Comey for his decision not to prosecute then-candidate Hillary Clinton, an event that happened ten months ago.
Instead, many people are speculating that Trump’s choice to fire his sitting FBI Director, an action that even impeached former President Richard Nixon did not stoop to take, has everything to do with the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s dealings with Russia. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer went so far as to indicate that Trump’s actions are part of a “cover-up.”
Said Schumer in remarks about James Comey’s firing, “Why now? If the administration had objections to the way Director Comey handled the Clinton investigation, they had those objections the minute the President got into office. But they didn’t fire him then. Why did it happen today? Were these investigations getting too close to home for the President?” Schumer also noted that the firing was done with the help and encouragement of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who recused himself from the investigation into Trump and Russia.
Schumer then urged Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to name an independent special prosecutor for the inquiry. Stated Chuck, “America depends on you to restore faith in our criminal justice system, which is going to be badly shattered after the administration’s actions today.” He added, “This investigation must be run as far away as possible from this White House and as far away as possible from anyone that President Trump has appointed. The only way the American people can have faith in this investigation is for it to be led by a fearless, independent, special prosecutor. If Rosenstein does not appoint an independent special prosecutor, every American will rightly suspect that the decision to fire Director Comey was part of a cover up.” Do you think Sen. Schumer is right? Watch his comments below:
