As is custom, our 45th President Donald Trump recently had his official portrait painted for the C-SPAN President Collection, and it was just revealed.
The internet exploded with laughter and mockery at the painting, and the painter Chas Fagan offered some unsettling observations about Trump as a subject.
Stated Fagan, “One of the more challenging aspects of this specific portrait was President-Elect Trump’s eyes. In most photos, his eyes are in shadow and difficult to see, in part due to his distinctive brow line. But eyes are such a recognizable feature, and necessary to give a portrait warmth and personality, so I worked to give them a bit more prominence. The result is that we have a softer look into his face than we often get from public media photography.”
Twitter users were far less polite about Trump as a subject and the fact that he was getting an official portrait. Said one user, “I’d like to be hired to do the official Presidential portrait of Donald Trump and then turn in a painting of Leia strangling Jabba the Hutt.” Wondered another, “Which shade of orange will the artist use in Donald Trump’s Presidential portrait?” Recommended one user, “I hope Trump’s presidential portrait is an artists rendering of him watching a Trump sketch on SNL.” Once the actual painting was revealed, a Twitter user was not pleased with the accuracy of the painting, stating, “Needs about 100 extra pounds and to be left in front of a blast furnace for a few hours to get it right.” What do you think of Trump’s official Presidential portrait?
